OPTEL, the world’s leading provider of traceability solutions, is helping five Irish pharmacies prepare for compliance with the European Union’s Falsified Medicines Directive (EU FMD) by providing the software and hardware required to connect to the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO).
The company recently deployed experts from its Limerick facility, as well as from its U.S. and Canadian operations, to equip the pharmacies with OPTEL Certa™ Software and Vertical Station hardware for barcode verification and decommissioning of medications.
OPTEL Certa™ Software, which was specifically designed to provide pharmacies with an immediate solution to comply with the European Union’s Falsified Medicines Directive (EU FMD), is now in use in several locations throughout Ireland, including Walsh’s Pharmacy in Oranmore, Galway; Kirwans Pharmacy in Kilmacthomas, Waterford; and Village Pharmacy in Piercestown, Wexford.
The EU FMD requires that all medicine packs carry a barcode containing unique identifiers so they can be verified and authenticated when going through the medicine supply chain before being dispensed to patients. All the unique identifier information is stored in a national database, such as the IMVO for Ireland.
Having passed the requisite self-certification tests, OPTEL recently announced that it is now officially connected to the IMVO, part of the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS), which allowed the company to push forward with the partnership.
Certa helps hospital and retail pharmacies become more efficient by leveraging collected data. The software, which can either be used as a stand-alone solution or be integrated into a pharmacy’s existing IT infrastructure, provides unmatched visibility into pharmacy operations and enables staff to focus efforts on what truly matters: delivering the highest quality of patient care.
In addition to the IMVO connection, OPTEL is now confirmed as a preferred supplier for the following National Medicines Verification Systems (NMVS): UK, France, Norway, Spain, Netherlands and Belgium/Luxembourg.
