Montreal, March 8, 2021  SANEXEN, a Canadian leader in the environmental sector, and OPTEL Group are partnering to ensure security and traceability in the treatment of single-use masks, gloves and other antiviral equipment collected from BOX-19s across Quebec, a solution developed by SANEXEN to ensure the safe disposal of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

“The partnership between OPTEL, which is a member of the LOGISTEC family, and SANEXEN stems from demands from the business community and institutions that wanted to ensure that PPE waste is disposed of responsibly,” said Benoit Dion, Senior Director of Major Accounts at SANEXEN. “The integration of OPTEL’s GeoTrace traceability application, which was adapted exclusively for BOX-19 services, certifies that the recyclable materials have indeed been recycled and that the other materials have been placed in a revalorization site and not a landfill.”

THE ABCS OF TRACEABILITY

All BOX-19s will now have a traceability label attached to them with a unique number assigned to each client. Drivers of the collection vehicles will scan the labels using the GeoTrace application which will collect a multitude of information. These include: the GPS location of the collection point, the date and time of the collection, the level to which the box was filled, the attestation of decontamination, etc.

“The technician will also use the GeoTrace application to scan the transport manifest when the materials arrive at the reception site, to prove that the bags made it to their destination,” said Tomas Langlais-Roy, Product Manager – GeoTraceability, OPTEL Group.

“The GeoTrace application also provides the ability to calculate the carbon footprint related to the disposal of the bags and the amount of metal that is recycled. This is important to an increasing number of companies that have environmental related concerns and who are looking for reliable data to help them reach their targets,” says Dion.

A QUEBEC SOLUTION

The goal of the BOX-19 turnkey solution is to manage the lifecycle of PPE waste, from source to final disposal. SANEXEN provides the bins, handles the collection and disposal of used PPE, certifies that the removal was completed (traceability), and equips companies, institutions or agencies with posters and digital resources that encourage safe behaviour.

The transportation of PPE is done with a dump truck equipped with a compactor. That means that there is no direct contact with the waste during the process. The BOX-19 equipment can be transformed into clean energy by using a non-polluting incineration process.
